Whenever a new version of SharePoint is released, the best way to play around with it is to create a virtual machine with everything needed to run SharePoint. This is a step by step instruction on how to build a SharePoint 2013 environment on a single virtual machine with Windows Server 2008 R2, SQL Server 2012, SharePoint 2013 and a Domain Controller. Minimum software and hardware requirements for SharePoint 2013 can be found in Microsoft website here:

To complete the steps I have used the following programs:

  1. Windows Server 2008 x64 R2 Enterprise
  2. SQL Server 2012 Server x64 Developer Edition
  3. SharePoint 2013 Server x64 with Service Pack 1
